The Washington Nationals and Kansas City Royals will face off on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the season’s first “half” before enjoying a the four-day All-Star break.

· Following the break, the Nationals will embark on a three-city, nine-game road trip that will take them from Philadelphia (3 G) to Baltimore (2 G) and Atlanta (4 G).

SUMMER OF ‘69

Rocking throwbacks from the 1969 Montreal Expos, the Nationals topped the Royals, 6–0, on Saturday afternoon…Max Scherzer continued his string of dominance, striking out 11 batters in 7.0 shutout innings…Kurt Suzuki (2-run) clubbed his 11th home run of the season while Juan Soto (2-for-4, 2 RBI) drove in two runs of his own.

· Scherzer also recorded a hit and a stolen base…According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first player since 1900 with multiple games with at least 10 strikeouts, a base hit and a stolen base…He also did it on April 9, 2018 vs. Atlanta.

· Scherzer has now won a career-best seven straight starts…He is the first player in franchise (MON/WSH) history to do it since Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez during the 1997 season.

· With 181 strikeouts prior to the All-Star break, Scherzer has recorded at least 180 strikeouts prior to the break for the third straight season…He joined Hall of Famers Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan as the only three pitchers to do it three seasons in a row.

SURGING SOTO

Dating to May 17, Juan Soto leads Major League Baseball in on-base percentage (.461) and is tied for the lead in triples (4)…He ranks in the National League in OPS (2nd, 1.105), average (3rd, .363) and slugging percentage (5th, .644).

· On the season, he ranks in the National League in on-base percentage (4th, .411), walks (6th, 51), OPS (8th, .955) and average (11th, .304).
