Why are Data Room Products so Awful?

Data rooms suck. They suck so bad you they belong on the list of products you’ve used that you probably concluded, at some point in your past, you just have to get used to how awful they are. Like most printers. Like Microsoft Exchange back in the day. Like bluetooth in cars. Or EPIC Systems healthcare suites. You name it.

If you’ve ever run a company, built a company, administratively managed a company, invested in a company, been a lawyer for a company, provided accounting or bookkeeping services to a company, bought a company, sold a company, or perhaps even worked at a company, you have probably been invited to use a data room before. And then, if you’re like me, you might have given up even entering the data room because the login process was so bad.

Or you might have logged in, been assaulted by MySpace-level eyeball bleed, gotten the bends just sitting in your chair because you’re looking at a 1980s airport green screen crap terminal, and then logged out as quickly as you could.

Or maybe you’ve had to work inside a data room and endured the endless folders, the insane duplication of documents, the extraordinary costs of uploading and downloading and organizing, the ridiculous burden of 1990s data architecture, and the senseless inability to link from one document to another.

Or maybe you’ve become so incredibly frustrated with existing shitty Data Room products that you’ve built your own ridiculous workarounds, like an elaborate custom Google Sheet or a glued-together instance of Box or some hybrid of Excel and a CRM. I know. I’ve been there.

Basically, if you’ve ever used a Data Room product, you know how terrible it is. But nothing could be more important. Every company needs a place to put its important documents and make them really easy to sort, organize, keep up to date, understand, and share.

It’s time for an upgrade!

Just about every company on the planet needs a Data Room. I mean a place to put your important documents that tell the history of the company. And to organize them in a way that makes easy sense. These include foundation documents, personal documents, governance documents, bank statements, etc.

I don’t mean a simple huge folder like Google Drive or a Dropbox where you upload everything you’ve got. If you’ve ever raised money or done a real deal, you know as well as anybody that a giant folder doesn’t do the job to get the business done. You need a Data Room. You need to organize your stuff.

I’m talking about a data room that will use best-in-class user experience, design, and Artificial Intelligence to:

That’s it. You don’t have to think about this ever again.

I can’t wait.
