Signs of a toxic company environment

The problem with a toxic environment is that many times we do not notice it’s toxic. Instead, we get burnt out and stop enjoying our work without knowing the reason. When you finally find out what’s going on, you’ve already spent months of your life in misery.

During my 10 years of professional experience I’ve worked in 1 or 2 toxic environments and have heard of many of them from my ex-colleagues.

That’s why I decided to write this article and mention some important points that are the signs of a toxic environment and the company is ought to lose some of its beloved employees.

There are many articles indicating that pressure can be useful, but that’s only the case when you put the pressure on purpose and in a controlled way. Working under pressure when the pressure is actually coming from an external source is toxic and if you keep it for a long time it burns out the people. Clearly you can not avoid external pressure, but you have to avoid having it for too long!

When the managers of the company tell their team members to take ownership, it sounds like they are not owning the failure. In face of a failure, the leader should take ownership, evaluate what caused the failure and with the help of the team members, improve the process so next time they can deliver better results.

Unfortunately, many times the higher level managers keep telling employees to take ownership whenever something went wrong instead of looking at themselves and starting from there.

Many companies still force employees to drop whatever they are doing to attend an urgent issue outside of the working time, thinking just paying the worked hours is enough. They have no understanding of the fact that personal time is very precious to people and expect everyone has to be available whenever needed.

Don’t take me wrong, it’s absolutely necessary to attend urgent issues outside of working hours but if you are expecting people to be on duty, you have to pay them (or compensate them somehow) even if nothing happens!

Having empathy cost the company nothing. It also gives a better image to the company which in the long run helps the company.

This is the worst that can happen to a company. If you hear your colleagues saying that HR is rude and has no empathy. That’s a sign of a company that is not healthy. HR doesn’t have to be friend with employees but it doesn’t have to be their enemy neither.

A company sometimes has to fire someone but they could be more empathic and even when the employee lash at them they have to be understanding and treat the employee with respect.

Final words: I think it’s necessary for the company to have a recurring session with employees to just hear what they have to say. If they take the feedback with an open mind and act on the valid ones it can improve the company environment drastically.

These are just some of the many points that indicate a company is toxic for its employees and they have to change the behaviour or they will lose their best assets (the employees) very soon.
