How I transitioned into a Software Test Engineer in 3 months

1st month

The first was by far the easiest and less stressful month. We started with the basics of everything, going through the lectures with ease as they were relatively short. Even though I was the team leader for my team, in the beginning, I did not know what my roles were concerning the academy. As time went on, I came to understand what my roles were. Setting up meets, making announcements and passing the message of the mentors to the team. These are just some of the responsibilities I undertook for the team. My assistant team lead helped alleviate some of my responsibilities. It was also another challenge getting to interact with the other team members as that was not my strong suit. Again my assistant team lead helped me greatly with that.

2nd month

This where the modules start getting hard as we were introduced to the more technical aspect of testing. In turn, this also tested us as we had to understand the lessons quickly as we needed to prepare for the group project that we needed to undertake. Coordination was key for this month and we needed to also put in our strongest cards when assigning task leads. Fortunately for us, we had people that stepped up to the plate. I dare say that it was not easy at all. Setting up meetings every day to discuss with the team members, having sleepless nights and also having to be the one to submit the work was a lot to take in but I held my own. There was a point where I almost didn’t meet the deadline because I got to work and was getting carried away. I only submitted with 10 minutes to spare but don’t tell my team members that. We had our group project defence which I’m happy to say that we were able to meet up to standard.

3rd month

This was the month of technical difficulties, everything seem to be falling apart. Be it work or the application we needed for our task was not working. It was hard and frustrating. This hampered my ability to be a proper team but this also took its toll on everyone. I and my assistant team lead would usually hold a meeting once a week to talk to the other members to discuss their tasks and any problems they have. But this was heavily dampened this month. At least my assistant held a couple of meetings while I couldn’t even hold one. It was very overwhelming and frustrating. I am so blessed to have team members that could take it upon themselves to help the other members when we couldn’t. This brought even more togetherness to the team and I am grateful for that. It took a while but I realized that the answer to the problem was for me to just take it easy. Sounds simple but then I couldn’t fathom it. I took that approach and I was able to do my project. It felt good to see the growth I’ve made over these 3 months and I feel like I’ve gained more than I thought I would.
