Must We Really Have Sex?

Apps and porn are pulling millennials away from physical intimacy

Turns out I am the best kind of millennial (oxymoron? Oh, shut up, baby boomers!). I was born in the beginning of the 80’s so I have lived life with and without smartphones, with and without internet and definitely without helicopter parents.

I am neither scared of apps, nor of seducing guys the old fashioned way. And I grew up merrily surrounded by porn and it didn’t melt my brain.

Apparently, I am lucky in many ways.

There has never been a better time to have sex, Julian rightly points out. In the Western world, at least, access to birth control is easy and there has been a cultural shift toward tolerance of all kinds of (consensual) sex. And yet young people are having alarmingly less of it.

No sex, no babies. No babies, no future work force.

In broad strokes, according to Kate Julian’s investigation, the most prevalent reasons for having less sex are easy access to porn (everyone’s favourite culprit) and a difficulty in engaging with other people in real life (without app mediation), which generates a withdrawal from physical intimacy.

But there is at least one positive reason for the decline: people (specially women) are feeling less pressured into sex they don’t want
